Post Operative Management
POST OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT FOR SKIN GRAFTS & EXCISION OF LESIONS
On the day of the operation you will be taken to your ward. You will be seen prior to going to theatre by the anaesthetic who will explain the procedure to you in terms of the anaesthetic and also the post-operative expectations.
You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
Re: Excisions of lesions
Leave all dressings intact and dry. If any bleeding occurs put pressure over the area for about 20 minutes. If it continues please call Dr Preketes' rooms during office hours on 47 37 3440, after hours call the Nursing Supervisor at Nepean Private Hospital on 47 32 7333 and they will contact Dr Preketes immediately.
Dr Preketes will provide you with a post-operative date after the operation which is usually within 5 - 7 days following the operation. Dr Preketes will take down the dressings himself and apply the appropriate dressings and he will also provide you with advice for looking after your wounds and skin grafts in the subsequent months. There will be a post-operative visit following the initial removal of the dressings in about 4 months time so that Dr Preketes can check on the wound / graft to make sure there is no recurrence of the tumour.
Looking after wounds on the lower limbs or legs or split skin grafts on any part of the body, for lower legs you will be in hospital for at least 7 days. Dr Preketes will have the dressings taken down at day 5 to make sure the skin graft has taken and that there are no complications. You will be discharged on day 7 with community nurse support for 2nd daily dressings to your skin graft and also to look after your donor site. Dr Preketes will subsequently see you at 6 weeks following the operation to make sure things are progressing in the right direction.
You will also be provided with a course of oral antibiotics and analgesia. The antibiotics are to be taken as prescribed and the analgesia to be taken only if required. POST OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT FOR BILATERAL BREAST REDUCTION AND MASTOPEXY
Prior to the operation it is best to a Betadine wash or shower. It is also preferable to shave the pubic area as much as possible and also any abdominal hair.
On the day of the operation you will be taken to your ward. You will be seen prior to going to theatre by the anaesthetic who will explain the procedure to you in terms of the anaesthetic and also the post-operative expectations.
You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
After the operation you will be taken to the recovery ward where you will remain for approximately an hour and then you will be wheeled back to your bed for your postoperative recovery period. You will be kept in hospital for 48 - 72 hours. Dr Preketes will personally remove the dressings on your last day of admission and advice regarding any further wound care management.
You will be able to shower on a 2nd daily basis and also following that you will need to dry your steri-strips which will remain intact for 7 - 14 days with a hair dryer. Dr Preketes will make the necessary arrangements for you to be seen in his rooms to have any remaining sutures removed.
You will also be provided with a course of oral antibiotics and analgesia. The antibiotics are to be taken as prescribed and the analgesia to be taken only if required. POST-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT OF BILATERAL BREAST AUGMENTATION
On the day of the operation you will be taken to your ward. You will be seen prior to going to theatre by the anaesthetic who will explain the procedure to you in terms of the anaesthetic and also the post-operative expectations.
You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
After the operation you will be taken to the recovery ward where you will remain for approximately an hour and then you will be wheeled back to your bed for your postoperative recovery period.
Post – operatively
You will be discharged 4- 6 hours after the operation with a very tight binder and bra on top of that or dressings are to be left intact and dry. Dr Preketes will see you in his rooms within 48 - 72 hours where he will subsequently remove all the dressings and apply the surgical bra for post-operative moulding and management.
You will also be provided with a course of oral antibiotics and analgesia. The antibiotics are to be taken as prescribed and the analgesia to be taken only if required. POST-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT FOR A FACE LIFT
On the day of the operation you will be taken to your ward. You will be seen prior to going to theatre by the anaesthetic who will explain the procedure to you in terms of the anaesthetic and also the post-operative expectations.
You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
After the operation you will be taken to the recovery ward. You will have a tight circumferencial bandage around your neck and face to avoid any complications such as a haematoma. This will be a tight dressing and will be slightly uncomfortable but you will be able to drink through a straw on the evening of the operation.
You will be discharged 48 - 72 hours after the operation and Dr Preketes will make the necessary arrangements for you to be seen in his rooms to have any remaining sutures removed.

POST-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT FOR HAND OPERATIONS

You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
After the operation you will be taken to the recovery ward where you will remain for approximately an hour and then you will be wheeled back to your bed for your postoperative recovery period.
Post – operative Period
Depending on the extent of the operation, normally these are day only procedures. You will be discharged the same day. Dr Preketes will make the necessary arrangements for you to be seen in his rooms at which stage he will remove the dressings. All dressings are to be kept intact and dry until you see Dr Preketes.

POST-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS WITH LIPOSUCTION
On the day of the operation you will be taken to your ward. You will be seen prior to going to theatre by the anaesthetic who will explain the procedure to you in terms of the anaesthetic and also the post-operative expectations.
You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
You will be kept in hospital for at least 6 hours, or Dr Preketes may want to keep you in hospital overnight depending on the amount of liposuction performed in the areas. You are to leave all dressings intact and dry, especially the garment or suit provided to you by Dr Preketes as this will reduce the amount of swelling and also bruising after liposuction procedure.
You will also be provided with a course of oral antibiotics and analgesia. The antibiotics are to be taken as prescribed and the analgesia to be taken only if required. POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ABDOMINALPLASTY

After the operation you will be taken to the recovery ward where you will remain for approximately an hour and then you will be wheeled back to your bed for your postoperative recovery period. This may last for 2-3 days.
On discharge day Dr Preketes will take down the dressings personally and advise regarding wound care. Basically showers can be had every 2nd day with drying of the steri-strips with a blow dryer and Dr Preketes will make the necessary arrangements with respect to your post-operative visit in his rooms.
TOTAL CONCERNS AFTER HOURS
You will also be provided with a course of oral antibiotics and analgesia. The antibiotics are to be taken as prescribed and the analgesia to be taken only if required. If you have any concerns or problems after the operation you can phone Dr Preketes' rooms during office hours on 47 34 3440. After hours you can phone Nepean Private Hospital on 47 32 7333 and ask for the Nursing Supervisor who will subsequently contact Dr Preketes and relay your messages to him. Dr Preketes will then make the necessary arrangements or provide the appropriate advice with respect to the concerns you may have.
POST-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT FOR A BLEPHAROPLASTY
On the day of the operation you will be taken to your ward. You will be seen prior to going to theatre by the anaesthetic who will explain the procedure to you in terms of the anaesthetic and also the post-operative expectations.
You will be wheeled to the anaesthetic bed where Dr Preketes will meet you and perform all the necessary pre-operative markings and drawings.
Dr Preketes usually admits his patients into hospital for at least 24 hours for pain relief and also for post-operative management. You will be discharged the day after the operation in the morning. You will have steri-strips or tapes on the top part of your eyes which are to be kept intact until your post-operative visit with Dr Preketes where he will remove the tapes and also most of the sutures.
You will feel some grittiness and have some blurriness in your eyes and this is usually a combination of any remaining Betadine or Chloromyecetin which is used intra-operatively.
